Control of Clock Jitter in High Speed Data Links

چکیده

Fast data links require a low phase noise reference clock. An alternative is to reduce the noise of a low cost clock part using the band pass filtering inherent to the clocking architecture in the link. This study has a two-fold objective: to verify clock noise filtering in a 16 Gbps data link, and to prove the degree of filtering is adjustable. Two measured band pass filters are presented. Clock jitter reduction can be achieved by narrowing the difference in the loop bandwidths of the Tx PLL and Rx PLL, and by setting the band pass filter at the noise floor of the reference clock. Therefore, 16 Gbps data links can be designed to filter the reference timing signal, eliminating the need for a clean, expensive clock source.

Receiver Jitter Tracking Characteristics in High-Speed Source Synchronous Links

High-speed links which employ source synchronous clocking architectures have the ability to track correlated jitter between clock and data channels up to high frequencies. However, system timing margins are degraded by channel skew between clock and data signals and high-frequency loss. This paper describes how these key channel effects impact the jitter performance and influence the clocking a...

Jitter Transfer in High Speed Data Links

Phase locked loops for data links operating at 10 Gb/s or faster are low phase noise devices designed to operate with a low jitter reference clock. Characterization of their jitter transfer function is difficult because the intrinsic noise of the device is comparable to the random noise level in the reference clock signal. A linear model is proposed to account for the intrinsic noise of a PLL. ...

Modeling of Jitter Characteristics for the Second Order Bang-Bang CDR

Bang-Bang clock and data recovery (BBCDR) circuits are hard nonlinear systems due to the nonlinearity introduced by the binary phase detector (BPD). The specification of the CDR frequency response is determined by jitter tolerance and jitter transfer. In this paper, jitter transfer and jitter tolerance of the second-order BBCDR are characterized by formulating the time domain waveforms. As a re...

Phase Jitter Transfer in High Speed Data Links

The problem is solved by using a linear model to account for the intrinsic noise. This study also introduces a novel technique for measuring ...

Jitter Tolerance Analysis of Clock and Data Recovery Circuits

In the scope of the development of a complete top-down design flow targeting clock and data recovery circuits for high-speed data links, we present two methods to analyze the jitter tolerance of such links, based on statistical simulation of incoming data jitter and its effects on the recovered data bit error rate using Matlab. The second method is based on time-domain simulation using VHDL and...
